£2.5m in compensation received after head injury
A father who can hardly move or speak after suffering a head injury when a branch fell from a tree has been awarded £2.5 million in compensation.
Jason Thatcher was in the back garden of his home when the branch broke off a tree overhanging his garden. His brain stem was so badly injured that he now suffers "locked in" syndrome.
As a result of the accident, although Mr Thatcher, a former Royal Mail employee, can think almost as before and is aware of his surroundings, his ability to move and communicate has been dramatically curtailed and his independence has been taken away from him.
Whereas before Mr Thatcher had been a typical family man, since the accident his wife, two daughters and extended family have been devoted to his care. The court heard how the compensation would provide the family with a home adapted for Mr Thatcher's needs and cover his care costs for the rest of his life.
