Disabled man wins personal injury compensation after being thrown from wheelchair

A disabled man who was thrown from his wheelchair after it hit a pothole has received £80,000 in compensation.

The man was on his way home from a concert with his brother, who was pushing him over a badly lit bridge. When the front wheels of his wheelchair struck the potholes the man was thrown out of his wheelchair and his brother landed on top of him.

The man who is paralysed from the waist down as a teenager after being involved in a motorbike accident was unaware he was injured as he could not feel any pain. It was not until the next day that he noticed his hip was swollen. The hip turned out to be broken and fractured and required surgery to insert and then remove a metal plate.

The man, as a result of the accident is afraid that a similar accident may occur and is now using a motorised wheelchair.

The local council admitted it had failed in its responsibility to keep the pavement in a safe condition and an out-of-court settlement was reached.
