Toxic sofa victims to receive compensation for injuries
Hundreds of victims from toxic sofas are to receive compensation for their injuries, following a settlement reached with the insurers of one of the retailers involved.
Injured individuals came forward in there thousands after suffering burns and skins complaints after contact with furniture containing fungicide, dimethyl fumerate (DMF). The dangerous substance was present in sachets inserted into the furniture in order to prevent the growth and multiplication of mould that can cause deterioration of leather products during transportation and storage. The chemicals contained in the sachet however are toxic in small amounts and cause blistering and bleeding of the skin.
The affected sofas were sold by Argos, Walmsely’s and Land of Leather.
All three retailers admitted liability for customer injuries; however 408 customers of Land of Leather were in danger of not receiving compensation in January 2009 after the retailer went into administration. An agreement was reached with insurers Zurich that will see the 408 injured customers including 55 children receive £1,800 each in compensation.
