A teenager who had an accident at work, which resulted in burns to his face has been awarded £6,000 in compensation.

The teenage boy was instructed to use a substance called pickling paste to remove burn marks inside a number of stainless steel tanks without supervision. The paste contains acid that can cause severe burns if it comes into contact with skin.

The tub of paste slipped from his grasp and hit a bench with some of the tub's contents landing on his face. This left him with severe chemical burns to his skin and right eye.

Although his injuries healed with no significant scarring the Court ruled that due to the hazardous nature of the paste it should not have been used. The product had previously been banned by the firm, however management failed to ensure the remaining paste was removed from the site. This resulted in a member of staff who was not aware of the ban giving the paste to the teenager to use.
