Cyclists who cause death or serious injury through dangerous driving could soon be charged with a road traffic accident offence.

Andrea Leadsom, the conservative MP who has introduced the bill says that she has received hundreds of e-mails and letters from people across the country complaining about accidents caused by cyclists on pavements, especially to children and elderly people.

According to the MP a common complaint is that following an accident, victims are unable to identify cyclists and as such there is a lack of accountability when an accident does occur.

In contradiction however, a 2009 study claimed that only a small number of accidents involving cyclists are caused by the riders.
