A Slovakian man working for a skip hire company was killed while trying to fix a damaged tyre on a large waste removing machine.

The 33 year old was trying to fix a split rim wheel on the industrial loading shovel machine when the tyre he was attending exploded.

The force of the blast lifted the man into the air and flung him head first into an excavator loading shovel. He was also hit in the head and body with a number of metal components. The Court found that the company provided its workers with dangerous and unsafe machinery and had not given any consideration to the potential hazards or conducted any risk assessments for tyre repair.

The firm was fined £150,000 after pleading guilty to failing to ensure workers' safety in relation to vehicle repair at their waste-sorting ground.
