A labourer who was exposed to asbestos in the 1950s has received more that £140,000 in compensation for disease associated with asbestos.

The man who is now in his 70s was diagnosed with mesothelioma after symptoms which included breathlessness and a persistent dry cough.

The man, who spent almost 20 years working in a factory specifically remembers an occasion when contractors spent a number of days removing asbestos  from the building and the amount of dust that this created.

In 2010 the man visited his GP with regards to his breathlessness and dry cough and was immediately referred to hospital for x-rays.

Early in 2011 he was told that his right lung had become stuck to his ribcage and needed to be loosened which would be achieved through key hole surgery. After which it was confirmed that he had malignant mesothelioma, which is terminal lung cancer.

The man who received a single round of radiotherapy was told that no further treatment would be of any  benefit to him. The out of court settlement will go towards ensuring that the level of care he receives for the remainder of his life is at the highest standard possible.
