Falling crane hook causes serious personal injury

A manufacturer in Cheshire has been given a £20,000 fine over an incident where an employee suffered serious personal injury when he was hit by the hook of a falling crane. Chester Crown Court heard that the crane was holding a 31 tonne load when the chains gave way. An investigation by the Health & Safety Executive found that the chains were only designed to lift a maximum of 17 tonnes and the crane itself was only capable of lifting a 27 tonne load.

The manufacturer has admitted failing to ensure the lifting capacity of the chains were clearly marked and therefore failed to look after the safety of its workers. The firm was fined £20,000 and ordered to pay £8,792 in prosecution costs.
