Driver paralysed after collision receives compensation

A driver who was left paralysed from the waist down when his vehicle ran off the road and overturned has received £1.25m in an out of court settlement.

The victim who was in his 50s, was driving an 8 tonne road sweeper in the early hours of the morning when he came across a stationary car in the road.

The black car had evidently broken down and had just been left in the middle of the road and when the victim came across the car, which he saw only at the very last minute he swerved to the right in order not to hit the car. Unfortunately in the process of coming to a standstill the vehicle flipped on to its side.

The victim suffered fractures to three vertebrae in his back, leaving him paralysed from the waist down. He also required several operations to repair his damaged hands.

Following the accident the man was in a specialist spinal unit for several months, before moving to a care home to continue his convalescence.

The compensation will go towards specially-designed accommodation and to regain some of the independence he has lost since sustaining his injuries.
