After a false start as a History teacher in the early 1980s Jan retrained as a solicitor and found her career niche. After gaining valuable experience as a commercial property lawyer in the City she joined Osbornes in 1990 and was able to develop her interest in Wills, Probate and Trusts work and now specialises exclusively in the private client field. Jan heads up the 7 strong non-contentious team at Osbornes and continues to develop her expertise in this area having become a registered Trusts and Estate practitioner (TEP). She is well known in her chosen area as a result of her active role as a member of the Law Society Probate Section Executive Committee. She is also a member of the London Central branch of STEP. Jan writes on Inheritance issues for Sweet and Maxwell and is a contributor to their looseleaf 'Cohabitation', writing the chapter on Inheritance and Succession. She is also an occasional presenter on this subject. Her most rewarding cases are intricate estate administrations and successful Inheritance Act claims on behalf of clients who have not been properly provided for on the death of a close relative or partner. Outside of the office Jan spends much of her time riding her horse, playing tennis (she doesn't like to lose) shopping and eating out with friends, which is probably why there is rather more of her than when she first came to Osbornes!
